New York. Geneboos Testimonial. - e publish the following letter addressed to us, which we appreciate for its generous sentiment and its just appre ciation of present difficulties. We were not wrong when, in a recent article, we attributed to our visitors that p mount of good sense that would make due allow ance for the combined influences of rain and the unavoidable effects upon the public streets and sidewalks of the many works, public and private, now in course of execution. Our northern visitors in their good natured and sensible accept ance of the inevitable will have their reward on their return next year when all the improvements shall have been perfected and all obstructions removed. Another subject is dwelt upon in the letter; and we ask 'Where is tie Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals'? The public would like to have some prac tical demonstration of its existence, and subjects for the exercise of its functions are not rare. The following is the letter referred to : Asheville, N. C, Aug. 23rd, 1887. Mr Editor: Dear Sir: All of ns Northerners who visit Asheville are delighted with the place and the people, and depart with regret, carrying away with us at least the hopes of returning next year, perhaps of buying and building. We are, of cjurse, indulgent to the state of things underfoot, because it is due to temporary difficulties, which Asheville is bent on soon overcoming. But I yesterday wit nessed an abomination which was the more remarkable because the general superiority of the horses here is one of the poiiits which pleases the visitor's eye; we admire the beauty of the horses,! fl rwl thp Mav irrann rtf tha vian i Yesterday afternoon in Main street opposite the court house we saw a wagon heavily laden with bricks, and drawn by three miserable horses, two of which sensed scarcely alive. Never have .we behold more wretched looking c.roa'-iires; theie wasscarrely an ounce of flesh be tween the skin and the ribs, and on one of them the strap had rubbed away the skin, so that blood was slowly oozing from tho wound. We directed the atten tion of a policeman to the piteous spect acle, and asked him if there were no Soc:ety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Asheville. He said he had already been spoken to on the subject, and requested to bring it before the com mittee of that society, adding that one of the horses had shortly before fallen from weakness, but was helped up, and farced to continue his work. Whether the Fohceman did as he was re tested or not, have no means of knowing; but at Irast I can submit it to your readers, and in this way th unfortunate animals had a chance of being protected from their brutal owners.
